Best Picture Oscar for this Ben Affleck vehicle about the rescue of the 6 hostages from the Canadian ambassador’s house in Teheran in 1980, a momentary bright spot in a terrible two years. Everyone looks as they did and shines in this “so crazy it just might work” (someone actually says, “here’s where someone should say this is so crazy it just might work” as a joke in the film). Fine acting, good pacing, and interesting characters But Best Picture?. I’d have gone with “Lincoln” of those I’ve seen (5 so far). So why did this win?. I suspect Bronwen got it right when she said “It’s like “Crash” a few years ago, a story where Hollywood is heroic and patriotic”. Alan Arkin and John Goodman are wonderful as the producer and makeup man (respectively) who help the good guys (the CIA?) save the day with this cockamamie plot. Full of quips as well, they’re the film industry whores with hearts of red-white-and blue gold. Don’t get me wrong. I liked and enjoyed the film. I suspect I’d prefer “Life of Pi” for the statue also, although I’ve not seen it yet. A feel good for America movie during a terrible time (I mean now!). Can’t we all just get along?
