Very fine, weird and demanding conceit of a movie about a man who loses his short-term memory in a horrible rape of his wife. Was she murdered?. He thinks/knows so. But he knows so as he tattoos his body with the clues he thinks he needs to hunt down the killers. In the process he winds up meeting and being used and abused by a huge number of rather unpleasant people including a cop, a barmaid whose lover he kills, and even the clerk of the hotel he is staying in while he tries to figure out what’s happened. In the meantime, there’s a parallel story about a man with a comparable condition who he met in his old life, which he remembers or thinks he remembers. It’s a very demanding and complex film, but easily worth the effort. You can’t miss anything from second one as he stares at polaroids which he takes and tries to make into a guide of his past for the future. But it all comes a-cropper. Each scene is shown twice to show you what he experiences and to show you what actually is happening. And each time, you have to try to put things together. You get it from his view of life but also from yours. It’s shown backward from the end of the film. A very interesting piece of work. See this one!
