“The Closer: Dave Chappell,” Serio-Comedy special, November 25-26, 2021, Netflix. Chappell takes on the LGBTQ communities and their power in this film of a live show in Detroit. He is angry over their policing of comedy, him, and those who question their redefinitions of gender (e.g., J. K. Rowling’s battles in England.) The film is only occasionally funny. He is hostile and (in one painful and kind sequence at the end of the film) empathetic and, as he acknowledges, more than a little hurt himself.
