Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery

Posted on November 17, 1997June 14, 2021 by Village Vidiot

“Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery,” comedy, November 17, 1997, video.  The mystery is, why did everyone like this silly bit of fluff so much. Even as a comedy, this Mike Myers conceit is overly long, thin, rather boring, and dumb as a parody/homage to 1960s/70s James Bond, secret agent, Man from UNCLE movies and tv shows. Names like Alotta Fagina mix with a Dr. Evil character. A few very funny visuals, and an embarrassing and all too true vision of 1960s pop/sex/spy stuff, but not enough to sustain the film. Odd, because the critics really liked it. Elizabeth Hurely is fun to look at. The film is not much fun to watch, even as brain candy. After all, the Bond pieces were, themselves, camp spectaculars when they were done in the ‘60s
