“The Opposite of Sex,” 10 April 1999 (1997), video. Very smart, funny, unsettling, interesting, playful, well acted, and well written and directed film (John Roos) about a 16-year old girl (Christina Ricci) wise and cruel beyond her years, who leaves her Louisiana home and mother and journeys to live with and exploit her gay brother (Martin Donovan) in Indiana. She steals his lover (Ivan Sergei), they steal $10,000, split for LA. The lover’s admirer (Johnny Galecki). publicly accuses the brother of molesting him as a student, costing him. his job as a teacher. The brother, his friend and fellow teacher (Lisa Kudrow), head out to LA to try to track down the couple and are followed by her admirer, a sheriff played by Lyle Lovett. The dialogue here is always crisp, funny, honest, nasty, and fun. It is a very good movie although hard to watch at moments. The title is about a life without sex and what sex brings, attachment and commitment. Christina Ricci is a cruel, lush, full-bodied young woman. Nothing lithe, she plays off well against the more talented Kudrow, the thin, seemingly anti-sexual spinster schoolmarm. See this one.
