The Buena Vista Social Club

Posted on September 17, 1999May 27, 2020 by Village Vidiot

“The Buena Vista Social Club,” September 1999, theater.  Wim Wender documentary about Ry Cooder’s rediscovery of Cuba’s “son” musicians. He reunites them, brings them out, and reopens all their careers. The music is great, the film leaves some important gaps unalalyzed: why did they fall from favor and disappear in the 1970s? Politics? Aesthetics? Which?. Why not stay together now?. I wish it didn’t feel like a tease, however, as no song is ever finished. Sort of a “buy the album” kind of teaser for the music. Havana is a disaster of crumbling buildings. Sad. This is especially interesting as a film about Cuba that features no Cuban politicos
