Jerry Maguire

“Jerry Maguire,” 24 February 2000 (1996),  video.  Unsatisfying Tom Cruise piece with fine work by Cuba Gooding. The film looks at a sports agent who comes to hate himself for the bullshit of his work. Disgusted, he dashes off a manifesto about the job and, shock of shocks, is fired. One admiring accountant (Renee Zelwenger—boy do I have a crush on her, she’s very talented, but this is not a good role) follows him out the door. He holds onto one problematic client from his many priors, and gets skunked by his old colleagues But he wins the day and, we see, discovers he can love. Well, I just don’t buy it, but it went bonzo at the box office. Go figure. An Officer and a Gentleman, The Right Stuff, among the sports heroes. Not my cup of tea
