“Sunshine State,” 12 January 2003 (2002), video. Latest from John Sayles, this look at the struggles around land development in Florida. Very nice work by most of the actors, especially Jane Alexander as the little theater lady, Edie Falco as her restraunteur daughter, Ralph Waite as their blind husband/father in the swirl of change, Timothy Hutton as the landscape architect for the developers, James McDaniel as Angela Bassett’s anesthesiologist husband, Mary Steenburgen as the civic planner whose work is truly unappreciated, and Angela Basset as the girl who returns home. Alexander, Waite, and Steenburgen captured my imagination the most. A good ensemble piece, but it doesn’t have the punch, the climax, of Lone Star. Slow and warm, it’s never steamy.
