Intolerable Cruelty

Posted on August 10, 2004August 21, 2018 by Village Vidiot

“Intolerable Cruelty,” August 10, 004, DVD. George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones star in this Coen Brothers lightweight. Clooney plays a take no prisoners divorce lawyer, while Zeta-Jones is the gold digging former wife of one of his clients. Some pieces work, but as a whole the film is less than the sum of its parts. Tricks and double crosses abound, but the people are all so nasty and selfish that we just don’t care very much. In the end, I guess Clooney’s character is played for more sympathy, but no one is very nice in this piece of California’s divorce culture. It’s like voyeuristic dumpster diving so that we can feel better than the nasty rich in the sun. Not worth much. I’ve much preferred their other films.
