“Wild Tales,” June 11, 2016 (2014), DVD, Spanish with subtitles. Written and directed by Damian Szifron, this Argentinian film features a set of short stories that are macabre, funny, frightening and very intense. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2015. The pieces chronicle vengeance in many forms, usually quite over the top, for crimes real and imagined. Death and extreme violence follow all too easily as punishment in this universe where primal rage lies just below the surface. Such urges result in injustice as often as justice. A slighted artist, a corrupt politician, a rich motorist forced to wait by a local truck driver, a skilled munitions expert with a short fuse, a conniving business man protecting his son and himself from facing the music for crimes committed, and a newlywed Jewess deranged by her new husband’s prior infidelity provide the grounds for retribution in these “wild tales”. The actors sure had a lot of fun with this one, and the casting and music play to their particular stories. See this one Addendum: As my friend, Pablo Pozzi noted, it’s important to view this film in the context of Argentine society today.
