“The Martian,” August 17, 2016 (2015), DVD. Team botanist Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is inadvertently stranded on Mars when, thinking him dead, his team makes an emergency evacuation. He must manage to renew contact with Earth, stay alive, and manage an escape. This Ridley Scott film is the best sort of science fiction, as it’s very realistic fiction about science, not horrible aliens or, worse, dream monsters like zombies and vampires. Damon excels. Fine acting from the rest of the crew with special props going out to Chiwetol Ejiofor as a NASA leader, Michael Pen~a as mission co-pilot, and Randall Glover as a super-shy physics geek, but really, all shine. Loved Jessica Chastain as the mission commander (cool management style) and Kristen Wiig as the NASA spokes in the land o’ super geeks. It was a joy to see a mature group of women and men working well together for years without a forced love affair. This was a real pleasure to watch and to imagine an alternate vision of international human cooperation.
