“Lion,” February 17, 2017 (2016), theater.  We enjoyed and appreciated this tale of loss and love from India and Australia. Five-year old Sarroo (Sunny Pawar) from an impoverished Indian village family accompanies his brother on a scavenging mission and becomes separated from him and inadvertently winds up over a thousand miles away after becoming locked on a moving train. He doesn’t know where he lived or even his full name. A harrowing six months later, he’s picked up on the street and sent to Australia where he is adopted by an all-too-perfect Anglo couple (David Wenham and Nicole Kidman). His adjustment and the legacy of his loss are the story that follows as Sarroo (Dev Patel) attempts to both make the best of his new situation and deal with issues of identity. Well-acted all around (Pawar and Patel are excellent, the latter and the film earning Oscar nominations) and it led me to some serious introspection about my own beloved daughter, adopted from Russia, and my limits as a parent. It’s well worth viewing, not least because it is beautifully shot. Based on a true story.
