“Moonlight,” (2016), April 8, 2017, DVD, home. Superb look at 14 years in the life of a black man as he goes from child to adult Each “act” in the film looks at him at a different moment: elementary school, high school, and his early twenties The film features brilliant acting from the three who craft a mostly silent character with their expressive faces, eyes, and bodies It considers the crisis of a community afflicted with drug use and abuse but demonizes no one except those who persecute folks who are different than they are Wonderful direction from Barry Jenkins who worked with story creator Terrell McCraney to craft a human and humane tale of one man attempting to come to terms with who he is in the face of great oppression (from many sources) Very sharp performances from all the supporting cast The film humanizes people normally presented as caricatures and cutouts Be sure to watch the special features that come with this on the DVD, especially the “Making” short movie including interviews with all the major and many of the minor role-players as well as the director and producers The feature on the musical soundtrack with its mix of classical and hip-hop/rap and sampling/electronic tropes is equally captivating To say the least, we really liked this movie.
