“Mission Impossible: Fallout,” August 10, 2018, theater. First, I’ve never been a fan of this franchise I went to see it because several reviewers I like really enjoyed this one The action sequences are excellent and, given that Cruise is Chan-like and does his own gags, are really quite impressive The plot is, from a political perspective, offensively simplistic and retrograde as anarchists seek to kill 1/3 of the world’s population So it goes Yes, the states are portrayed as clearly evil too, but this is too much Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is good and very comfortable in aging in the role, as are some of the supporting actors, especially Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames as his core crew They’re at home in their skins here, but Henry Cavill is wooden and cartoonlike as, predictably, the lead villain I found both Alec Baldwin and Angela Bassett disappointing Sean Harris’s anarchist supervillain is occasionally impressive but, in all, is also not up to scratch The female principals are all cool and, of course, beautiful, but the film is only worthy of viewing for the adrenalin rushes that come from the visuals and the amazing stunts the actors are doing Those are impressive I look forward to seeing the DVD with its special features on the making of the film, but the big screen works for the movie itself I don’t know how long Cruise can keep this up By all accounts, it was incredibly wearing and even his castmates worried for his survival I’d like to see him act again I’ve enjoyed his character roles, especially his deranged and wonderful bit in the 2008 action-comedy, “Tropic Thunder” or his work in “The Color of Money.”
