Kate and Geoff Mercer (Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtney–she’s incredible and he’s a pleasure to watch as always), are celebrating their 45th anniversary with a grand party as he was sick for their 40th. He receives a letter, however, that informs him that the body of his previous lover from before he met Kate has been found in a crevice in Switzerland as the glacial ice has retreated. Much is uncovered in the Mercer household as well, as photos and slide projectors reveal emotional truths of love given and withheld. As anyone in a long relationship knows, how we deal with our companions prior lives is a delicate dance, and the early 1960s were not the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Sometimes the music doesn’t play until late in life and it can be very unsettling. We both really liked this disturbing and painful film from Andrew Haigh’s adaptation of a David Constantine short story, “In Another Country”. Bronwen was very aware of the camerawork, including his use of depth of field, in the film and how it accentuates Rampling’s emotional trauma while also displaying the beauty of the English setting. I’m not certain, but it sure looks like Norwich where I went to school. Excellent and revealing soundtrack of another time
