John Favreau wrote, directed, starred-in and produced this funny, fun fairy tale about a chef who, trashed by a critic who once praised his work, regains his bliss for cooking in a food truck that serves roots food with the help of a trusted sou chef, wonderfully played by John Leguizamo, and his 10-year old son who truly wants to connect with his father and does so through the cooking. Excellent work from Bobby Carnivale as a line chef in the old restaurant, Robert Downey, Jr as the bizarre ex-husband of ex-wife Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson as his restaurant hostess (and oh is she special), and Oliver Platt as the food critic. Dustin Hoffman is oddly flat as the clueless and venal owner of the restaurant who won’t let Favreau shine. Fun stuff about social media and wired America’s obsession with food, meltdowns, rebirth, and keepin’ it real
