Jafar Panahi wrote and directed this very interesting little film about six girls arrested for trying to sneak into the Iran-Bahrain soccer match in the 2006 World Cup cycle. An indictment of the oppression of women, it was filmed over 38 days but one of those was the actual game day at the stadium. It has not been shown in Iran (for obvious reasons). It speaks to the incomprehensible repression of women in the country and the contradictions it involves. The soldiers themselves don’t understand why they’re ordered to do what they do and know it’s incredibly stupid. Very sympathetic treatment of all caught in this awful mess. A bit too sweet at the end, but worth seeing nonetheless If you watch it on DVD, see the interview of the director who talks about how he decided to do this film after his daughter was barred from going to a game. Well acted. We watched it with our daughter. She wasn’t keen on it at first but really settled down and enjoyed the film despite the subtitles. A great way to merge interest in sports with politics and culture in a painless way!. See this film
