“Brittany Runs a Marathon,” April 17, 2020 (2019), Amazon Prime during Covid-19. We saw this two nights before the Boston Marathon would have run thus year. Brittany (Jillian Bell) is not an easy person to be around. Her NYC career has not gone the way she’d hoped, she’s gained a lot of weight, and has not been able to turn her life around. She’s smart, funny, and hostile to anyone trying to get close to her. She can’t afford a gym and starts to run which brings her in touch with Seth (Micah Stock), another newbie runner, and Catherine (Micahla Watkins) a seemingly totally in control photographer and established runner. The three begin to run together and to train for a marathon. To earn money, Brittany starts dog sitting which brings her together with Jern (a very funny and appealing Utkarsh Ambutkar), a 30-something floundering happily (?) along at the margins. Crisp, sometimes humorous dialogue and a protagonist who has a flatter learning curve and vastly more rough edges than most made this one interesting and let me welcome a sweet ending that might otherwise have been off-putting and excessively saccharine. I needed something like this to not sink further into the dark.
