Bread and Tulips

Both Bronwen and I enjoyed this very nice Italian romantic comedy (subtitled) about a married woman finding herself in the big city of Venice. On a bus holiday with her ingrate family, she’s accidentally left behind at a rest area. Instead of waiting for her plumbing supply entrepreneur husband and her two teenage sons to come get her, she hitches a ride to Venice and proceeds to find her way in the big city. Rather than returning home, she gets a job and rents a room in the home of a depressed Icelandic waiter (go figure) played by the marvelous Bruno Ganz. Her growth, his story, her avoidance of matters of home and family, and a goofy subplot about a plumber/private detective and a wholistic masseuse (yes, it is a bit silly) make this a very rewarding 109 minutes. Charming, although not as schmaltzy as it might have been, which is all to its credit
