Mangrove

“Mangrove,” Episode 1 of “Small Axe,” December 10, 2020, Netflix.  The first piece in Steve McQueen’s history of the Post-War Anglo-Caribbean experience in London.  He wrote and directed these, he said, for the community itself.  This introductory piece, is very much a primer for youth today, showing the travail their elders experienced.  It looks at the battle over the Mangrove restaurant, a battle waged to break police brutality and abuse and to help establish a sense of community solidarity.  Set in 1968, it demonstrates the explicit racism afflicting Black Anglo-Caribbeans who migrated at British invitation and met cruelty and discrimination.  Police assaults were the norm.  The rise of a Black Pride and Black resistance movement led to police riots and, not surprisingly, the arrest of organizers.  The court cases, meanwhile, vindicated the resistors even as it did not end the struggle.  Well worth viewing.  It is didactic but it’s also powerfully instructive and informative.
