Bronwen and I both really liked this Gus Van Zant biopic starring Sean Penn as the charismatic gay SF supervisor who was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone. In his one year in office as the first elected out gay male official in the country, he helped transform the nation and his view of the imperative of being out helped shape a movement. Very well acted without being overly reverential. If it has a flaw, it’s that there are almost no women at all in this set of developments save Anne Kronnenberg, his astoundingly cute campaign manager in his winning run. This is both false to the times and the movements Still, it’s a fine bit of work. See the features with lots of interviews and some excellent history. Stellar work by Josh Brolin as Dan White and Emile Hirsch as Cleve Jones. Lots of the ‘real folks’ figure in cameos and walk-ons in the movie. Good to see Van Zant do this. See this film. Penn is superb
