Things We Lost in the Fire

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Cheryl loaned us this fine film about a woman (Halle Berry) whose husband Brian (David Duchovny) is tragically murdered. She’s left with two kids (both precocious, one of them is Berry’s son) and establishes a relationship with Jerry (Benicio Del Toro), Brian’s best and oldest friend and a very wacked out former-lawyer become heroin addict. Guilt and anger make a heady cocktail in this story of learning to accept and go on living. It’s well done by all. A fine script by Allan Loeb and excellent direction from Susanne Biers, a Danish director. Indeed, the film has a real European feel, rather French in styling as an intimate story where nothing blows up and there are no aliens. The supporting actors are all stellar, especially John Carroll Lynch as their neighbor, Howard, and Omar Benson Miller as Berry’s brother (I think he’s wonderful). Both Berry and Del Toro really make this work. The latter is superb as a junkie. It’s a painful and loving movie about people helping one another move on. To say the least, it’s not easy to do. Of course the film has its flaws: it’s set in the land of wealth, of beautiful people in the upper middle class. It would have been much more interesting if they tried to have normals deal with this situation with money as an issue. Also, Duchovny is just too perfect, as is their marriage before the fire. There are no flaws other than her irritability. Still, this one See this one
