The King’s Speech

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Effective, traditional filmmaking, this chronicles the struggle of George VI to overcome his speech impediment, a task that became all the more crucial when he followed his brother to the throne on Edward’s abdication and England goes to war. Geoffrey Rush as Lionel Logue, the ‘unconventional’ and uncertified speech therapist who helps him overcome enough to be an effective speech maker. Interesting, especially about the cruelties inflicted on him that, the film suggests induced his stammer, and very well played. A fine story for anyone dealing with a disability. It makes me wonder if FDR and “Bertie” ever talked about the meaning of their disabilities and the task of leadership. I fear it may win the Oscar [it did] as the best feel-good movie of the year and as a rebuttal to the anti-royal “The Queen” with H Mirrin. I much prefer “The Social Network” with “The Fighter” in second place
