Black Panther

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

First, I am not a huge fan of comic book cinema. I liked the first “Iron Man,” the darker Batman films, and, I must admit, the first “Superman” although I’ve never been able to believe a man can fly. That said, I really enjoyed this huge hit of a film. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler (“Fruitvale Station” and “Creed, both excellent), it stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, king of Wakanda, the African country that’s not what it appears to be, and the superhero Black Panther. He can really act. He must battle the furious Erik Killmonger (the superb Michael B Jordan, also of “Fruitvale” and “Creed) as the latter seeks vengeance for genuine family and historical injustices. He’s an understandable villain even as one rejects him for the dictatorial impulses that go along with his righteous anger. Excellent support from old pros Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett and the striking Danai Gurira (“The Walking Dead”) among others. The script is crisp, with the right touches of humor, although Martin Freeman is a lame good white guy, especially poorly backgrounded as a CIA operative. Andy Serkis finally appears on screen and chews up every bit of scenery there is. One negative: yes, culture matters and the idea of good kings with real power may seem valid to some, but quite frankly, it rankles as we attempt to move beyond the limits of our pasts. All in all, however, three cheers for Coogler’s vision, a super sharp script, fine actors, and Marvel’s smarts to bring him and the rest of this crew onboard. Stan Lee’s cameo is, again, a pleasure. It will be interesting to see if they can keep the franchise at this level after such a strong start
