The Spanish Prisoner

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Good, well-acted piece written and directed by David Mamet. Features excellent ensemble work by a group of fine actors (Steve Martin in a lovely character bit, Rebecca Pigeon [Mamet’s wife], Ben Gazarra, and several other really fine bits of work). Story of industrial espionage and a big con. Like all Mamet-conceived work, this plays through the words more than the actors. There are moments when the language doesn’t play so well, as when Pigeon slips into something that Joan Crawford might have said in 1935 like, “gee, don’t you know I love you, you big lug”. Very intense stage-like presentation. Odd tone. Stays with you
