Fruitvale Station

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Hard to say one enjoyed this disturbing look at the last day of Oscar Grant, III, who was killed at Fruitvale Station in Oakland, CA on New Year’s Eve by a BART transit cop. Well acted by Michael B Jordan, he’s portrayed as truly resolving to turn his life around. It’s been bumpy. His mother, played by Octavia Spencer, is excellent, as is Melanie Diaz, his ltr and mother of their 4-yo daughter. Damn but the current crop of child actors is precocious. Some areas of heavy dramatic. license, especially scenes with a bag of reefer, a pit bull on the street, dancing on the BART, and maybe the meeting on the streets of SF, but mostly straight up storytelling. He’d been in prison. Was trying to change and not always successfully. He was gunned down for nothing. That much seems clear. The little pieces?. Do they matter?. To the extent that we can’t tell fact from fiction, well, maybe. Still, see this important film. When I saw it, there were seven (7) people in the suburban theater.
