Billy Elliot

I can’t believe it took me 12 years to see this film. Jaime Bell stars in the title role as a young (11-year old), working-class boy who prefers ballet to boxing. He is tarred as a ‘pouf’ by his family and community, both locked in conflict over a mine strike that includes his dad and brother. A moving and positive film that recounts the attention and encouragement he receives from the ballet instructor (Julie Waters in a fine turn) who realizes what a rare find she’s made. His father and brother are struggling to survive and he’s becoming something they can’t understand. Can they come to accept it?. It is a moving film with class up-front and personal, with youth sexuality and stereotypes ruling life in a world of conflict. Nice dancing and well acted. Again, class made real. Imagine “Staying Alive” dominated by ballet and class conflict. Another film that uses T-Rex’s “Children of the Revolution” along with several other songs by that band
