I don’t usually like concert movies. They usually don’t capture my imagination or really please me. I just don’t care for the pyrotechnics. This Eric Clapton/Ravi Shankar festival recorded a year after George’s death in 2001 (how can that be?) is a real exception. If you haven’t seen it do!. The first Indian/Western fusion pieces feature astounding sitar and tablah work by Shankar’s son and granddaughter (no, no Nora Jones, sad to say) although the fusion of the two styles didn’t always work for me. As choral work it is really impressive. The western work is wonderful by Clapton, Billy Preston, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jim Capaldi, George’s son Dhani (the spitting image), and (spoiler alert!!!!) Ringo and Paul. It is wonderfully moving retrospective of George’s compositions. Most are really stellar, and yes there is the odd pop piece that just isn’t at the same level, but this is a joyous and worthy homage to the “serious Beatle”. Not surprisingly, Bronwen was a “George girl”. See this one with the best sound you can muster.
