Sherlock Holmes 4-5 July 2010

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

I enjoyed parts of this Robert Downey, Jr vehicle despite myself. A mediocre plot with way too much action, I’m a Holmes traditionalist (no shock there), he and Watson (Jude Law) set out to thwart the plans of an evil cult to take over the government with faux magic and terror. Downey and Law are excellent together and make the film work. The latter is no bumbler, and is in fact a proper soon-to-be married gentleman. The women’s roles are quite pointless, poorly written, and poorly acted. Very high paced, violent action film. I’d watch another but it really is irrelevant except in denying that there is any sort of mystical magic to any of the crimes. Nature and science rule the day, not demons and gods. He’s like “House” with cocaine instead of Vicodin. Or perhaps “House” is Holmes. It’s nice to see the triumph of the Enlightenment over magic for a change, but it’s not enough to make the film really enjoyable to me.
