I enjoyed this hagiographic biopic about the great Jewish slugger. He provided wonderful heroics for American Jews during the 1930s and 40s. But that is its only point. It is well but endlessly made. Really nice interviews with lots of his fans, including Walter Mathau who realized he didn’t have to be a cutter in the garment district if he didn’t want to be because, well, look at Hank!. Too much Alan Dershowitz, professional Jew. Thank God this wasn’t about the Yankees so we could avoid S J Gould and Billy Crystal, and also not about the Dodgers so there was no Doris Kearns Goodwin. The actual fans she found were intelligent, funny, articulate, and a pleasure to listen too. Some fine interviews with Greenberg from the early 1980s also. But this is a big film to build around a great player whose claim to fame is that he was a great Jewish player. Still, fun to watch. Aviva Kempner, the filmmaker, was there and answered questions
