I liked this Dustin Hoffman-Emma Thompson vehicle for its fine acting through ¾ of the film. Its last quarter becomes happy melodrama where all is neatly resolved. Blech. Hoffman and Thompson really shine, the former as Harry Shine, a failing jingle writer from NYC. ET is the now older Kate Walker, a single woman caring for Mum in their London house, the legacy of a divorce from Kate’s dad who ran off with his secretary and all good will toward ‘man’kind. Harry is in London for his daughter’s wedding. He’s not been a good dad and is an outsider. It is pretty painful all around. Fired by phone, he meets Kate, well, re-meets her, and they strike up an odd friendship that is worth watching. These two are such wonderful pros!. Sad that the script-writing couldn’t keep up with their fine work
