Hugo

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

I really enjoyed and was moved by this Martin Scorcese homage to early filmmakers and French culture. Hugo is an orphan who lives in the interstices of a Paris train station where he minds the time and mends machines. He meets and is befriended by Isabelle, a lovely young orphan girl cared for by Papa George (the marvelous Ben Kingsley) the owner of a small, unsuccessful toy stand in the station, and Mama Jeanne his wife. Mysteries of movies and machines, of men damaged by their experiences and circumstances including a gimpy policeman played by Sasha Baron Cohen, and children moving through life protected or broken by the adults around them. And always, there are the movies. It is a stellar film with a great sound track. See it in 3-D in the theaters although that raises the price by 30%!. My pick for best film in the Oscar hunt this year. See this film
