The Leopard

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

I was blown away by this remarkable1963 Luchino Visconti three-hour masterpiece. Burt Lancaster (dubbed) plays the Prince of Salina in Sicily as Garibaldi invades to establish a republic and unify Italy. His nephew takes sides with G but the prince stays above/outside all politics His is the class of the leopard and lion. He correctly sees that their time is over, even as things return to status quo ante in so many ways. A new class, the class of the jackal and hyena, the base money grubbing parvenus, is taking control. His nephew will go with that class in the new constitutional monarchy of the Savoys, but he cannot. Neither will he block them. A remarkable study of one class fading away while another comes to power. Lancaster was amazing in the role. I wonder if his appearance in Bertolucci’s “1900” isn’t partly an homage to his role here. Worth every minute. And Claudia Cardinale is incredible. Brilliant
