The Band’s Visit

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

I was somewhat underwhelmed by this. small, multiple award winning fairy tale from Israel about an Egyptian band’s visit gone awry, although I think Bronwen liked it more than I did. I would have liked a bit more edge. Still there are parts to enjoy. The band arrives and takes the wrong bus, arriving in a totally sterile outpost town. They are ‘forced’ to stay with locals, a ‘hot’ divorcee and a troubled unemployed man. The results are both humorous and sadly predictable in some ways. The story is heartwarming and heartbreaking in that it speaks to both the real difficulties and possibilities for resolution of conflict in the region. Despite that, it’s banned in Egypt and has been viewed as an insult there. The acting by both Israelis and Palestinian Arabs is very fine; the divorcee and uptight band leader steal the movie. Both are truly excellent.
