I’m not someone who follows reality TV or any of the gossip mags. But who doesn’t know the story?. Well, according to this brutal comic/drama directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Steven Rogers, almost all of us. Australian Margot Robbie is a more beautiful and feminine Harding (and yes, that matters) yet she plays a most convincing Tonya: obsessed, hardened, brutalized and brutalizing, unacceptable in the sport she excels in because of. who she is not how she skates, and unable to accept responsibility for anything that happens. Allison Janney (Oscar, Best Supporting Actress) nails her sadistic, brutalizing mother, LaVonda Romanian actor, Sebastian Stan, excels as her abusive/abused boyfriend/husband/ex-husband/manager, Jeff Gilloolie. Finally, Paul Walter Hauser is a pleasure as Shawn Eckart, the delusional, almost deranged friend/bodyguard who completely screws this up by believing his own lies. The Harding-Kerrigan ‘incident’ is one of the first big 24/7 cable-news cycle scandals and the film lets us get that. A worthy film about glory and success in America and what it means up and down the social foodchain. .
