The Big Sick

Interesting to see this right after “Menashe” because even though this is a very different film, there are many themes in common. In particular assimilation, communal/family pressure vs individualism, and what one will do for the people one loves most dearly. Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani) is a Pakistani-American immigrant struggling to make it as a standup comic in Chicago. His parents want him to go to law school and settle down with a nice Pakistani Muslim woman. He, on the other hand, meets up with Emily (Zoe Kazan) but can’t bring himself to let his parents know about her. They split up when she discovers his double life but her illness leads him back to her life as he contacts and gets to know her parents (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano, both of whom are excellent). He must decide who and what he is and what love and identity mean to him. A feel-good movie in the time of Trump. Nanjiani and the real Emily wrote this. We both liked it a lot. I strongly recommend seeing this along with “Meet the Patels,” a comic documentary on the same themes.
