Star Trek: Beyond

Posted on August 17, 2018 by Village Vidiot

Prequel 3 in the Star Trek saga. Kirk (Chris Pine) is bored with his 5-year mission and may want out, and thinks that, perhaps, Spock should replace him. But Spock’s going all last Vulcan on us and thinking of leaving. That all gets put aside as the crew of the Enterprise sallies forth to rescue unknown aliens, like some Medieval knight aiding a damsel in distress. Well, all isn’t as it appears. Baddies in the bushes, great work by Idris Elba (does he ever do anything wrong?), craft a plan to push back on the Federation’s smug, self-satisfied, exploratory non-military but highly militarized ethos. He and his henchmen will show them what’s really up in this Darwinian universe. Anyway, lots of fun shoot-em’-ups, occasional moralizing, and some fun visuals. Our first Blue Ray, but it also let us see how hokey the makeup was on the aliens, and how plastic many appeared. Bronwen actively disliked the film, I was not moved by it, but I have to admit I enjoyed it nonetheless. Even Ambassador Spocks death, built into the plotline early (hardly a spoiler, since Leonard Nimoy died recently) was more sanctimonious than moving. More’s the pity. Anyway, onward to the 4th one that will again take us where no one has gone before
