Before Sunset

Posted on February 10, 2013November 7, 2022 by Village Vidiot

“Stranger Than Paradise,” February 10, 2013, DVD.  The 2004 sequel to the 1995 “Before Sunrise” about a young American man (Ethan Hawke) and French woman (Juliette Delpy) who meet in Vienna and spend one long day and night together before she has to leave. He’s now a successful author on a book took in Paris who’s talking about his novel about that day and night. She comes to the reading and they spend the day together before he has to go. It seems improvised, it’s not. Tightly scripted by director Richard Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy, it’s a talk-fest as they struggle to figure out the meaning of what happened, what their lives are now, and what they should do about it. A very good film but there are almost no pauses. I enjoyed this one a lot but preferred the naïve qualities of the younger characters which almost replicated a night on a train I experienced in 1972. Still, this is a very good and well-crafted film. I can’t wait to see the recently released “Before Midnight” which is the third feature in this series.
