“Identity Thief,” February 16, 2013 , theater. There is nothing remotely believable about this Justin Bateman-Melissa McCarthy comedy about a boring middle class accountant, Bateman, (the only accountant in the country paid 50k) whose identity is stolen by wacko sociopath, shopaholic McCarthy. He runs off to Florida to save his career in a cockamamie plan to bring her back to Denver so that she can be arrested. From then on it becomes a dumb buddy road movie. There are, however, some funny scenes (all McCarthy-centered). After she goes all ‘soft,’ so does the film. It becomes a film about renewal (well, sort of given the ending). She’s very pretty when she’s ‘cleaned up’. Saw it with the whole family. Better than “Parental Guidance”. . McCarthy has a wicked wit and, when she’s on, a feral, demanding physicality (including sexuality). Bateman was sour and wasted as the straight (I mean reeeeally straight) man.
