“Ocean’s 8,” June 2018, theater. I liked “Ocean’s 11” a lot, enjoyed “Ocean’s 12,” and was bored by “Ocean’s 13.” This one is an all-female crew headed by Sandra Bullock as Danny Ocean’s sister Debbie and Kate Blanchett as her friend Lou lead their own gang to conduct a massive jewelry heist. Co-starring Anne Hathaway (surprisingly good), Mindy Kalling as a diamond expert, Helena Bonham Carter (a ditzy almost Carol Kane-like role), Rhianna as a super computer whiz named “9 Ball,” the story moves on inexorably. A bit too inexorably, actually. Not enough really funny give and take, although there are a few good jokes, my favorite part of the show became seeing who’s there in a cameo. Elliot Gould makes a short appearance, as do many celebs both old and new. Still, I wish the piece had much more edge, more humor and tension, and more twists and turns. A nice idea. Maybe O-9 will be better when they get the kinks worked in.
