Happy Go Lucky

Posted on March 20, 2010September 15, 2020 by Village Vidiot

“Happy Go Lucky,” 20 March 2010 (2008), DVD  Very nice little Mike Leigh film about a playful and rather zany 30-yo elementary school teacher in England (Sally Hawkins in a lovely turn as Poppy). You follow her teaching, her efforts to bring joy to the world and her growth as a caring and understanding person. Amazing interactions with her deranged, paranoid and very lonely driving instructor Scott (Eddie Marson) and her friends and family. This is a wonderful little film The bits in her flamenco class and the comments of the teacher about Sevilla, oranges, and marmalade are priceless. Lovely bit with a spinal adjuster at a clinic. One odd and wrong sequence with a homeless man but there’s so much that really fits in the film. The features attached to the DVD go far towards explicating Leigh’s unique style of filmmaking.   See this one.
