Away From Her

Posted on July 28, 2009July 17, 2020 by Village Vidiot

“Away From Her,” 28 July 2009 (2006), DVD.    We both really appreciated this study of a couple coping. Fiona (Julie Christie) is slipping rapidly into an Alzheimer’s Disease dementia while Grant (Gordon Pinset) struggles to keep her both present and with him. Very Canadian film made with silences and thoughtfulness. She loses her near present but remembers the pains of the past as she develops an attachment to a married patient in the home she’s moved herself into. Olympia Dukakis as the wife of the new beau is the only off note, with her lines feeling wrong somehow. Too bad. I usually like her a lot, Christie is gorgeous, I mean amazingly gorgeous. Pinset is excellent, and I really liked the young nurse who goes from sweet to terribly bitter and back. A sad and meaningful film that is nonetheless loving. See this film although be prepared for a movie where little ‘happens’
