“Queen to Play,” (French with subtitles), 30 July 2012 (2009), DVD We both really enjoyed this French film about a chambermaid who becomes obsessed with chess. She turns to her American employer, Kevin Kline, for lessons and he obliges. It’s a very interesting film with looks at class, gender, and age through the prism of chess as she becomes completely taken over by the game. Her husband doesn’t know what’s happening, everyone assumes it’s about sex, and no one really understands it. This is a winner, although it suggests someone emerging into competition chess at an almost impossible speed. Still, this is a very good film.
