Nebraska

“Nebraska,” May 15, 2014 (2013), DVD.   We both really enjoyed this quirky, understated, black-and-white comic/tragi look at an elderly Montana working man, Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) who comes to believe that he’s won a million dollars in a sweepstakes and needs to go to Lincoln, Nebraska to collect it He’s a tough old bird, an alcoholic, and his long-suffering sons and wife, herself no easy, loveable soul, can’t dissuade him. His son David (Will Forte) agrees to take him on what becomes a ‘special’ road trip back to his Nebraska farm town/home town where his ‘family’ and former business partner (Stacy Keach) believe he’s come into money and want a piece of the pie. These are tough and laconic folks, often as dry as the prairie, a space that seems very distant from this post-modern American scene. The economy has not been kind to this town. Some of these folks are gracious and kind, others are greedy and opportunistic It’s a road trip that enables David to come to know and understand who his father and mother are and how they came to be that way. It’s also a very loving film. Nominated for Best Actor (Dern) and Best Picture. A few moments ring less than true, but the film still works for me. See this one.
