“Enchanted,” 25 December 2007, theater. We enjoyed this Disney feature that both satirizes and reaffirms Disney’s artistic and ideological matrix but in a very funny and creative way. Princess Giselle meets and falls for her “one-true-love” Prince Edward. They are to be married immediately when the evil Queen sends Giselle to the real evil world of NYC (the irony here is that she pops up in Times Square, an area almost totally redeveloped and sanitized by Disney). There she meets the nasty people of NYC but also experiences the kindness of divorce lawyer Robert (Patrick Dempsey nee Dr McDreamy) who is single-parenting his daughter after his wife has fled the co-op. He’s a cynical realist about love. Giselle, of course, is a cartoon character made flesh. Eventually Edward comes after her as does the Queen played wonderfully by Susan Sarandon. So nice to see her with some bite again after so many preachy roles. The scenes where Giselle calls the forest animals of NYC to help her sew a dress in the apartment are a real hoot!. In the end, of course, love rules over all, everyone slips into their ‘true’ self, and all live happily ever after except the queen. No shock there. Timothy Spall as the queen’s go-fer, Nathanial, is excellent. The film is entirely non-subversive, it reaffirms all of Disney’s ethos but is still really fun to watch while playing to our romantic delusions and tropes.
