“Breach,” 30 December 2008 (2007), DVD. We watched this somewhat conventional spy thriller down at my mom’s in NJ. It’s certainly watchable: Chris Cooper is intense as Robert Hanson, the FBI agent/spy who caused incalculable damage to US security interests in the US and overseas because he could, Ryan Philippe as the young FBI worker who wants to be an agent who’s charged with helping bring him down, and Laura Linney as the agent in charge of the team trying to bust Hanson. All three are good, especially Cooper who plays the reactionary Catholic (Opus Dei) Hanson with real righteous bite and Linney playing the very solo FBI agent, but the film struck me as forced and just too conventional The dialogue seemed rather trite. Everyone had the same tense look and feel to them all the time. Jack Webb rules. Also, and this is very petty, I really disliked the makeup.
