J. Edgar

“J. Edgar,” 12 June 2012 (2011), DVD. OK film starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the despicable Hoover portrayed in all his narcissistic arrogance and evil but not as a cartoon. Judy Dench as his repressive mom is really wonderful. Leo’s accent so-so at times. It follows him from 1920 and the radical purges (many by breaking the law) through the Baby Lindy kidnapping. Then it picks it up from the Kennedy years through the end. His relationship with Clyde Tolson is left somewhat ambiguous as is his reputed cross-dressing but it is played here as pure repression. Who knows with this human reptile who illegally spied on everyone to retain his own power in DC. Vicious reactionary. Sorry, no opinions on the guy. The film is ok but not great. One of my least favorite of Clint Eastwood’s directorial pieces, and even creepier now that the convention is over.
