High Fidelity

“High Fidelity,” December 17, 2000, video.  This quirky and very playful John Cusak vehicle looks at the life of the owner of a vinyl music store in Chicago. Good tunes as it chronicles his relentless failures in love. The people who patronize and work in the store are priceless, the women are great (Lily Taylor is wonderful!) and the movie works. A wonderful appearance by Bruce Springsteen. A bit overlong, but still quite worth the look. It’s fun. Based on a book originally set in London (so I’ve heard, maybe I should learn to read?. Nah). They condescend to the audience with amazingly simple questions. As total music geeks, they would be asking one another questions about the 8th track on a third album, not the a-side singles they use as quiz questions. But who in the 16th row would know the answer? We’ve got to be kept in the loop feeling good.
