The Cat’s Meow

Posted on May 30, 2003November 24, 2022 by Village Vidiot

“The Cat’s Meow,” May 30, 2003, DVD.  Nicely acted little piece about a murder aboard WR Hearst’s yacht “The Oneida” in 1924. The film suggests that Hearst (good work by Edward Herman who I normally don’t like all that much) shot Tom Innes, the creative force behind the cowboy movie and a producer in decline, accidentally when he thought he was shooting Charlie Chaplin (nice work by Eddie Izzard, the English drag queen) who had a crush on his mistress, Marion Davies (wonderfully played by Kristen Dunst, [I’m in love!]). Louella Parsons parlays her vow of silence into a lifetime contract with the Hearst papers, while the English romance novelist well played by Joanne Lumley watches the whole thing go down. Interesting movie, well acted, directed with brio by Peter Bogdonavich. It was on one ‘best of’ list for 2002, and probably wouldn’t be on mine, but it was a well crafted, quick witted flick by real pros.
