Lost in Translation

Posted on September 12, 2003August 21, 2018 by Village Vidiot

“Lost in Translation,” September 12, 2003, theater.  We loved this quirky intense vehicle for Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannson written and directed by Sophia Coppola, produced by her and her dad. It looks at the strange trips taken by Murray, a 50-ish actor, and Johannson, the 25-yo wife of a young photographer as they meet on their separate journeys to Tokyo. Murray to make $2 m endorsing a whiskey, SJ just visiting. Their inability to connect to the culture, their aloneness, their inability to speak to one another of the love they clearly feel is truly touching. Seems very influenced by much recent Chinese film, but is also very nasty about westernized, commercialized Japanese culture. Funny and good film. Coppola and Murray may win Oscars for this one [Well, at least Coppola won. Murray should have]
